This fictional work taps into Native American myth and legend and is set around the time of first contact with the outside world. Its geographical setting is the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada (modern day New England and New Brunswick). The story includes reference to a number of tribes residing there to this day; namely, Mi'kmaq (Lnu or MI'kmaw), Maliseet (Wolastoqiyik), Passamaquoddy (Pestomuhkati), Abenaki (Alnobak), and Penobscot (Panawahpskek) the five tribes of Wabanaki Confederacy.
