Rodrigo Silva is forced to attend his fathers public execution for the loss of a ship to English pirates. Its a huge injustice. Its not true; he vows revenge. But destiny has a surprise in store for him. After becoming a cartographer in Seville, he becomes a master at the art of navigating and drawing nautical maps, which leads him to join one of King Philip IIs most ambitious plans: conquering China. As a secret emissary, he must depart immediately and infiltrate the fabulous Oriental kingdom to study the viability of a Spanish colony in the territory, outline the contours of the vast country using reliable data, and inform on the activity of a Jesuit settlement that Rome is mysteriously hiding. There, his knowledge opens many doors, but also pushes him to the edge of death and takes him to the Imperial Court in the Forbidden City. Throughout twists and turns, among admirals and pirates, conspiracies, viceroys and spies, savage natives, fanatical clerics and kind missionaries, he discovers that you cant trust everyone and that love is found when you least expect it
