One evening Billy Wiles, a reclusive Napa County bartender and former writer, finds under his car's windshield wiper a typewritten note which tells him he has a choice: do not take the note to the police and a lovely blond schoolteacher will be killed; take the note to the police and get them involved and an elderly woman active in charity work will be killed. The note gives Billy four hours to choose. Billy's friend on the police force, Lanny Olson, thinks this seems like a sick joke. Lanny advises Billy is to go home and forget about it; besides, no crime has actually been committed. Less than twenty-four hours later, a young blond schoolteacher is found murdered. It's Billy's fault: he didn't convince the police to get involved. Now the notes come faster, the deadlines grow tighter and the killer becomes bolder and crueler with every communication.
